The Barstow Lady Knights faced off with an outstanding Kansas team that won the 2017 Class 3 State Team Championship, Kansas City Christian. The girls came out firing and picked up their biggest win of the season, defeating KC Christian 6-3.
At #1 doubles, Hannah Tadros and Helene Bergere just dominated the net against KCC,. They fought from behind at 5-6, and won the last three games for an 8-6 win. At #2 doubles, Lauren Shore and Hope Leathers did the same. With active net play and strong serves Hope and Lauren won 8-2.
And at #3 doubles newcomer to varsity, Alizeh Shaikh and Mia Sabapathy rolled to a decisive 8-0 win.
That left the Lady Knights needing just two singles matches to finish. Hope Leathers paved the way with strong groundstrokes and a big serve and came up with an intense comeback win. Down 5-6 Hope rolled off three games in a row to seal the win. Needing one more to take down the state champs, Alizeh Shaikh dominated her match with an 8-0. The last match of the day was perhaps the most exciting. Helene Bergere at #4 used solid attacking ground strokes to fight her way to an 8-8 tie. In the tiebreaker, playing to 7 points, Helene and her opponent exchanged points and pushed to 5 all. Helene took the last two points to seal a 6-3 win for the team.
The Knights take that terrific doubles action to Santa Fe park tomorrow to play in the Blue Springs Doubles Tournament. Congratulations, ladies.
