Student life at Barstow is packed with possibility. As they perform, play, write, debate and create, our students build community and confidence in classrooms, on stage and on the playing fields.
We offer robust arts and athletic programs, time-honored traditions and a wide variety of clubs and activities. Unlike many schools, we don’t expect students to choose just one interest — we encourage them to explore everything.
In and out of the classroom, we believe in building community, developing sportsmanship and responsible citizenship, and supporting each other's well-being. Our mission remains "to give symmetrical development to mind, body and character."
Athletics at Barstow have a long tradition of excellence. The Barstow Knights bring home conference, district and state championships in a wide variety of sports — and everyone has the opportunity to play. Good sportsmanship and a drive to win are hallmarks of the Barstow athletic program. Student-athletes compete on 30 no-cut middle and upper school teams. Since 2015, 45 Barstow athletes have earned All State honors, and many go on to play at the college level.
From lower school through graduation, our students participate in dozens of clubs for fun and service, and they love participating in “only at Barstow” traditions, some that date back more than a century.
School counselors are an important part of the Barstow community. Our counseling program supports student success and social-emotional learning in kindergarten through grade 12.
Three certified school counselors help students understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, develop empathy for others and establish positive relationships. Counselors develop relationships with students through classroom visits, weekly check-ins and one-on-one interactions. They host regular Parent-Counselor Book Club discussions and provide relevant resources for families.

From Our Counselors
During uncertain times, anxiety can increase or arise in our children and in ourselves. When your children ask questions about a disaster or crisis in the news, not knowing how to answer can be difficult. We've developed resources for families to help guide these conversations. They each recommend a few basic, but important steps: take the time to talk, to listen and to reassure.
Mrs. Chanos has a master’s degree in school counseling from California Lutheran University and a master’s degree in clinical psychology with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy from Pepperdine University. She joined Barstow in 2018.
