Students Spend 'Day Off' Serving Others
A group of upper school students spent Presidents Day spring cleaning at a Kansas State Historic Site.
Eleven upper school students volunteered at the Shawnee Indian Mission on Monday, Feb. 19. They dismantled empty display cases and moved them into storage, cleaned rooms and cleared spaces so that parts of the mission's history can be better featured; classrooms, an infirmary and spaces for spinning and weaving. The group also washed windows and cleared tree limbs from the grounds to prepare for spring mowing.
Besides its status as a state historical site, the site is the only National Historic Landmark in Johnson County.
The 12-acre property in Fairway, once spanning 2,000 acres, operated as a training and boarding school for children of the Shawnee, Kaw, Ottawa, Delaware, Wyandot and Osage tribes, from 1839-1862.
