Knights Rosck at State Tennis

The Barstow girls tennis tema returned three state medalists to the school on Saturday after  a big weekend in Springfield.
The biggest splash was from freshman Sarena Biria.  Sarena found herself playing the 2018 runner up in the first round on Friday and pushed her to to 5-5 in the second set before losing 5-7. This was to be the closest match that the John Burroughs player would face as she went on to win the 2019 title with an easy 6-1 final set in the finals. The FINALS just happened to be played perhaps in the very first round.
Sarena Biria moved to the consolation where she became the class of that field and aside from the Burroughs state champ was the only player to emerge with 4 consecutive wins.  On Friday Sarena whipped Lutheran South and teammate Mary Colombo, then on Saturday she rolled through a fine player from St. Pius, 8-0, then for became the 5th place medalist with a dominating 8-1 win over an outstanding player from Visitation Academy.  Sarena finishes the season in singles with a 24-4 singles record.
As mentioned earlier, freshman Mary Colombo represented Barstow well first round, but with an unfortunate placement in the bracket was forced to play Sarena to remain in the tournament on the consolation side.  Mary completed her fine season with a singles record of 20-8 against one of the areas strongest high school schedules.
In doubles, senior Hope Leathers and junior Mia Sabapathy completed a fine doubles season to emerge on the state medalist stand, as well.  Wtih two victories on Friday over Bishop Duborg and Bolivar, the girls moved on to Saturday competition on Saturday.  Although they lost to Pem Hill and Sion, both girls played well and finished as 8th place state medalists.
Congratulations ladies, a terrific weekend.
