The Barstow School is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Arthur Atkison, who served as Headmaster at The Barstow School. Mr. Atkison passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Please view the obituary here
Mr. Atkison was Headmaster at Barstow from 2001 to 2008. He provided thoughtful leadership and supported a strong culture of academic excellence and student-centered learning. During his tenure, he was known for his genuine passion for teaching and his ability to connect with students, leaving a lasting impact on countless young people and colleagues alike.

Prior to serving at Barstow, Mr. Atkison attended the University of Arkansas, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and later received a Master’s in English from the University of Alabama Birmingham. He built a distinguished career in education, teaching at Pembroke Hill School and Fort Worth Country Day School before his leadership at Barstow.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Atkison found joy on the golf course and on his bike, embracing the simple pleasures that kept him active and engaged.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelley Cartmell; son-in-law, Tom Cartmell; and grandchildren, Trent and Quinci Cartmell. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Robyn Trent.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Arthur’s memory. Alzheimer’s Association of Kansas City, 3846 West 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208.
