Third Graders Portray Difference Makers

What does it take to be a "difference maker?" Third grade students researched a wide range of historical and contemporary leaders and shared their inspiring stories on Friday, Jan. 27.
Difference makers, students learned, are people who impact and inspire change in their community, their country and the world in politics, diplomacy, the humanities, arts, athletics and service.

One by one, students in Ms. Lathrop's, Ms. Molina's and Ms. Kloser's classes marched to the stage of the Raymond B. White Auditorium to present research papers and notable quotes to an audience of parents, faculty and classmates.

Amelia Earhart made an appearance, followed by soccer star Lionel Messi, civil rights activist Rosa Parks, baseball legend Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr. and dozens more.

Although each figure had a vastly different cause and path to success, the theme that underlined almost every presentation was the person's ability to overcome challenges to have a positive impact on the world around them. The difference makers unit combines reading, writing and research skills with Barstow's leadership and character education.
