Honorary Alumnus
The Barstow School is deeply saddened to learn of the death of honorary alumnus Mitchell "Mac" Gratwick II, who served as a faculty member at Barstow from 1971 to 2007. Mr. Gratwick passed away on April 22. Read the full obituary here.
During his remarkable 36 years at Barstow, Mr. Gratwick taught middle and upper school history and political science, and coached upper school soccer and baseball. Prior to working at Barstow, he served in the United States Marines as a lance corporal and received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Columbia University.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas `02, a former student, said, "My love of world history started in Mr. Gratwick's high school classroom, but more importantly, my understanding of respect, preparation, and diligence persists today because of the lessons we learned from him."

Mark Luce, Barstow's English Department Chair, said that Mac had a "profound impact" on his approach to teaching and showed him "what it means to be a Barstow teacher."

"He was exceedingly well read and held his students to high standards; however, he did that with an underlying warmth and genuine care for his students," Luce said.

Mr. Gratwick was the father of Benjamin Gratwick `87, Emilie Gratwick `84 and Trey Gratwick `81, and the grandfather of Ashley Gratwick `13 and Tyler Gratwick `15.
