Because every student, every day, benefits from The Barstow Fund.
The Barstow Fund
What is The Barstow Fund?
The Barstow Fund is the school’s most important fundraising program.
It makes an impact for every student, every day, and funds our immediate needs. Like all independent schools, Barstow depends on charitable giving to provide enhancements to its programs (such as athletics, the arts, technology, professional development and much more). The Barstow Fund takes these programs beyond the basics and provides an experience both broad and deep for our students setting us apart from our peers. The gifts entrusted to us help fund a school where each donor can impact the individual growth and development of a child.
Thankfully, we don’t do it alone.
Donating to The Barstow Fund is an important part of the school’s culture and a tradition that includes everyone— parents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees and friends. The resources provided by you and others allow Barstow to be nothing less than extraordinary. While tuition pays for the work we do today, philanthropy inspires our vision for tomorrow!
This is the school’s most important fundraising program. Your tax-deductible gift helps make up the difference between tuition revenue and the actual cost of running the school. This is critical because tuition covers about 80% of the cost of educating a child at Barstow. When making your Barstow Fund gift, you can direct it to one of our Family of Funds and support an area that is important to you. These funds include arts, athletics, building and grounds (which includes our Barstow Gardens), curriculum, faculty development, financial aid, technology and discretionary.
Planned gifts are made by donors who want to provide for The Barstow School through a bequest in their will or trust. Planned gifts can offer significant tax benefits for donors and their families as well as help secure the financial future of the school. Donors who inform us that they have named the school as a beneficiary in their will or other planned giving vehicle become members of The Barstow School Heritage Society. Please visit the Planned Giving page of our website where you will find helpful information about estate planning as well as a Gift Illustrator that provides calculations on how you and the school will benefit from specific gifts such as remainder trusts, lead trusts and annuities.
Endowment gifts to The Barstow School Endowment Fund are particularly valuable because they are invested for the long-term, creating a measure of financial security and independence for the school. There are different kinds of endowment gifts that you can make.
One of the most gratifying experiences a donor can have is to make a gift in honor or in memory of a loved one, faculty member or friend. These gifts will live on in perpetuity at Barstow. Honor and memorial gifts can be made to unrestricted or scholarship funds.
A Message from the Advancement Chair
I am exceedingly grateful to all the donors who supported the 2017-2018 Barstow Annual Fund. When you give to Barstow through the auction, an appeal or Tree Day, your gift makes an immediate impact for every student. Together, our gifts broaden access to the school's exceptional offerings: from the arts to athletics to a wide variety of curriculum offerings. My deepest thanks to parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni and friends of the school who helped us exceed our 2017-2018 fundraising goal.
Please consider making a charitable gift to The Barstow Fund again this year, or make a pledge to be paid prior to June 30. If you are interested in giving to the Endowment Fund or have questions about a planned gift, please contact Director of Advancement Ryann Galloway Tacha.

You don’t. The Barstow School is fiscally responsible and stewards every dollar to ensure every child gets the best education money can buy. But we don’t stop there. We do more than that each year, therefore, more investment is required. The Barstow Fund offers our families a way to support those investments with a tax deductible gift. You can certainly end your support with your tuition payments each year, but many Barstow families fchoose to make gifts gifts to support the people and programs that impact students every day.
We don't assign amounts to our families. We don't want to tell you what to give. Your gift is your way to say thank you and to inspire Barstow's faculty. The amount of appreciation and inspiration is up to you.
Barstow is honored by the annual contributions of its alumni, families and friends. Every year, our donors acknowledge and inspire us with their gifts. We are pleased to recognize their contributions to Barstow in our annual giving report magazine and through the following giving levels:
