Barstow Plans Expansion with Leawood Property Purchase
The Barstow School, the oldest independent, co-educational college preparatory school for preschool-grade 12 in Kansas City, announced that it will undertake a significant campus expansion by purchasing the building at 12200 State Line Road in Leawood, Kansas. Barstow plans to renovate the space to expand its Early Childhood, STEAM and award-winning Robotics programs. The campus addition will also offer a broad range of extracurricular activities and enrichment programs for students from other schools throughout the community.
“I am delighted that we are in the final stages of acquiring the site on State Line Road. The size of the building lends itself to many educational opportunities such as the introduction of a makerspace, STEAM classrooms, music and performance studios and a home for our award-winning Robotics program,” said President and Head of School Shane Foster. “The proximity to our existing campus will allow easy transportation of students to and from the new location. While the school plans to open these spaces by the end of the 2018-2019 school year, we are not planning to move a division of the school to this site. Our existing location in Missouri will continue to serve as our primary campus.”
The former Hy-Vee grocery store space in Leawood Plaza offers 62,680 square feet and 170 parking spaces. The purchase will increase Barstow’s campus, currently located at 11511 State Line Road in Kansas City, Missouri, by more than 50 percent. Once open, it will be the first time in the school’s 134-year history that Barstow has a campus in both Kansas and Missouri, though the current student population comes from more than 60 different zip codes on both sides of the state line.
“The Leawood Chamber of Commerce is very pleased that the Barstow School has chosen to invest in Leawood, and we look forward to them transforming this site into part of the Barstow community,” said Leawood Chamber President and CEO, and Barstow alumni, Kevin Jeffries.
Barstow’s investment in the development will allow the school to increase and strengthen its programming, serve as a catalyst for renewed community interest in Leawood Plaza and provide a permanent presence in the neighborhood that has been Barstow’s home since relocating from 5110 Cherry Street in 1962.
The property at 12200 State Line Road has been vacant since 2014. The purchase proposal is currently in its due diligence phase, with plans to bring it before the Leawood City Council by the end of summer.
