Knights Win on Senior Day

The Barstow girls tennis team took on another large class school, the Blue Springs Wildcats at home Thursday on SENIOR NIGHT and walked away with a 8-1victory. With the much appreciated help of the Barstow Booster Club and and the newly installed 2024 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM picture, the courts were dressed out and the crowd was strong.

The Knights opened with another sweep in the doubles competition. At #1 doubles, senior Sonya Shkuta and sophomore Anya Stanojevic rolled through their opponents, 6-0. At #2 doubles, juniors Emilia Prier and Duha Azaz used Duha's strong net game and Emilia's steady baseline game to win 6-1. And in the #3 doubles match, junior Mira Gupta and freshman Maura Gupta broke open a close 4-4 tie to pull off a 6-4 victory. In singles #1, Sonya played a solid returner but her stronger groundstrokes and improved first serve percentage helped her cruise to a 6-1 win. At #2 and #3 singles, Anya and Emilia both overpowered their opponents for 6-0 wins. At #4 singles, Duha Azaz had some struggles and ended with a 3-6 loss. Mira Gupta used a consistent backhand to roll off a handy 6-1 victory and finally Mara Hughes used a consistent first serve and fuller groundstrokes to sail to a 6-1 win.

The ladies take on St. Michael's at Santa Fe Park in Independence at 4:00 on Oct. 3.
