Girls Doubles Team Wins District Championship

Senior Sonya Shkuta and sophomore Anya Stanojevic win the Class 3, District 7 Doubles Championship.
In keeping the long tradition of Barstow District doubles champions, senior Sonlya Shkuta and sophomore Any Stanojevic, won the 2025 District Doubles Championship on Friday at Truman High School.  The girls received a bye in the first round, then rolled over Truman 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.  Next they took on a tough St. Teresa's team in the semifinal. In the first set the Knights started slow and found themselves down 1-2 before reeling off 5 of the next 6 games by finding their first serves and swarming the net for a 6-3, 6-2 win. In the District Championship match Sonya and Anya started out strong, smothering returns at the net for a 6-1 victory. In the second set, the Knights found themselves more tentative and lost a 5-4 lead to lose the second set 6-7 (4-7) to set up another tiebreaker for the District Doubles title.  The girls turned on the aggression in the match breaker. They jumped to a quick 4-2 lead then poured on the big groundstrokes and stole winners at the net with aggressiveness. All afternoon both girls were impressive with their steady service return and went on runs when they turned up their net play to earn the District 7 doubles title.
Sonya and Anya earned a trip to Springfield for the Missouri State Doubles Championships October 23rd and 24th.
