A Legacy of Excellence

Second grade teacher Mallory Plungkhen was honored as the 2026 recipient of the Betsi Brooks Krumm Award for Excellence in Teaching, a recognition of excellence presented annually to a faculty member nominated by their colleagues.
Named in memory of Barstow alumna and lifelong educator Betsi Brooks Krumm ‘90, the award celebrates exceptional teaching and dedication to students. Nominators described Ms. Plungkhen as a "pillar, peacemaker and problem solver," praising her compassionate support of students and fellow faculty members, her ability to make learning joyful and her unwavering commitment to the Barstow community.

She received the award during a special presentation by Dr. Berent Krumm, Betsi's husband, along with Betsi's classmates and friends Jenny Thiessen Waldeck '90 and Sean Hart '87. A generous gft from Cheri and Robert Brooks, Jr. ensures that this annual award will be given in perpetuity.
