Upper School Looks to Year Ahead at Convocation
Students offered each other valuable advice and encouragement for the year ahead at Upper School Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The ceremony takes place every September in the Senior Circle. On Thursday, Dr. David Cramer led the faculty procession, followed by students who took their places in concentric circles around the armillary. The Barstow Singers, under the direction of middle and upper school choral director Ben Wang, led the singing of "Standards High."
Convocation sets the tone for the new school year by delivering charges to each class; sophomores charge the freshman, juniors charge the sophomores and seniors charge the juniors. This year's remarks from student leaders encouraged their peers in each grade to meet new challenges with excitement, learn from mistakes and difficulties, practice self care, and in the words of upper school director Dr. Jenny Marien, "widen their circle." After each class received its charge, students left the circle until only the seniors and faculty remained.
Seniors received their charge from a member of Barstow's alumni community. Alumna Lorelei Culver ‘22 returned to campus to remind seniors that it's okay not to know exactly what the next year, four years or the future looks like — but that they can always relay on the things they learned at Barstow to help guide them.
