Third Graders Spotlight Real-World Difference Makers
Grade 3 concluded their unit on difference makers this week with a community service field trip, a research project and presentations.
During their yearly unit on difference makers, third graders had the opportunity to make a difference in the Kansas City community themselves by volunteering and donating to two nonprofits. On Wednesday, Jan. 28, they visited Giving The Basics in Kansas City, Kansas, where they sorted and packaged soap and toothbrushes for the organization to distribute to members of the community. The class also brought their own donations, contributing 1,211 personal hygiene items. Back on campus, they made over 100 dog and cat items for donation to animal shelter Wayside Waifs.
On Thursday afternoon, third graders shared their own research on what it means to be a difference maker. Parents and teachers joined the class in the auditorium, where each student gave a short presentation on a person who has made, or continues to make, a positive difference in the community or world. Each presentation answered several questions, including why that person is significant, why the student admires them, a struggle or adversity they overcame and why others should strive to be like that person. Students chose to research people who have broken racial and gender barriers such as Jackie Robinson, Katherine Johnson and Sally Ride. Other students presented on athletes such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Simone Biles who inspire their fans through physical and mental perseverance. One student, who volunteers at Wayside Waifs, chose scientist Jane Goodall as her difference maker because of their shared love of animals. Through this project, students not only got the chance to learn about people that they admire, but also to practice their research and public speaking skills.
