Grade 6 Writer Wins at State Level

Sixth grader Nezar Alchekakie was selected as the first place winner for his grade at the state level of the 2025 American History Essay Contest, organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Earlier this year, Nezar was chosen as the sixth grade winner at chapter-level by the Shawnee Mission DAR chapter, advancing his essay to the state competition. At the state level, one essay per grade is selected from submissions from students across Kansas. As the state-level winner for sixth grade, Nezar’s essay will now advance to the national level for consideration.

The annual contest invites students in grades 5–8 attending public and private schools to explore American history through writing. This year’s topic focused on the era of the American Revolution (1773–1783) and the people involved in that period.

Barstow students consistently earn recognition in the DAR American History Essay Contest at the chapter, state and national levels each year.
