Alumni Return to Barstow to Share Real-World Experience
Young alumnae returned to Barstow on Wednesday to talk to freshmen about short- and long-term goal setting and seniors about college life.
Divya Dendi `22, Samantha Georgie `22, Isabelle Karpin `22 and Selena Spurrier `22 spoke to both groups in the auditorium. To the freshmen, they recommended attending as many school events — like dances — as possible, finding mentors in other students, not competing with each other and using a planner to help balance school work with social activities like sports and clubs.
With the seniors, the alumnae shared their college admissions and decision making processes. Isabelle and Divya talked about their experiences transferring colleges to find the right fit. Samantha and Selena discussed how the work ethic they cultivated at Barstow allowed them to balance school work and graduate a semester early. All the alumnae recommended getting to know professors during office hours, and answered questions about pursuing passions versus choosing traditionally lucrative majors.
Hayley Greenwood `24, now a journalism major at Mizzou, also visited campus to speak with BTVN students. Hayley currently works as a production assistant with television station KOMU in Columbia, Missouri in addition to her studies. She credits the BTVN program for helping her get familiar with equipment and software, and allowing her to hone her workflow and productivity skills in a way that’s applicable in the real world.
