Upper School Field Trips Provide Service Learning Opportunities
Upper school students participated in service learning and team building field trips on Monday, Sept. 15, with freshmen, sophomores and juniors volunteering with different organizations across Kansas City.
Freshmen divided into groups for community service and team building activities at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kanbe’s Markets and Uplift KC. Kanbe’s Markets addresses food insecurity in Kansas City by providing fresh, locally sourced food to businesses and stores around the city, while Uplift KC provides food, clothing and other supplies to the homeless.
Sophomores visited Care Beyond the Boulevard, which provides medical care to people who are homeless, uninsured or otherwise underserved in Kansas City. Juniors volunteered at Ruby Jean’s Garden, a community garden on Kansas City’s east side, helping the organization in its mission of offering fresh produce and educational opportunities to local residents. Recently founded by the owner of local business Ruby Jean’s Juicery, the garden’s purpose is to promote health and wellness by making fresh produce available to members of the community.
These trips emphasized the importance of giving back and the impact students can have on the community when they dedicate their time to serving others.
