Kindness Club Brings Meaningful Message to Classmates
Barstow’s Kindness Club, a chapter of the nonprofit organization SevenDays, organized a kindness-themed assembly and activities on Friday, April 4.
Founded in 2014, SevenDays began with the idea that small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect and an overall positive impact on the community. The organizations honors Dr. Bill Corporon, Reat Underwood and Terry LaMonno, who died during a mass shooting in Johnson County. SevenDays is part of their legacy, providing resources for Kansas City area schools and ongoing training and activities for student leaders. Seniors Leili Deshmukh and Abby Hill are members of the Kindness Youth Leadership Team at SevenDays, and lead the Kindness Club at Barstow.
Rain prompted a change in plans from an all-school walk on the track to a middle and upper school assembly, where SevenDays youth director Jill Anderson spoke about the community impact of intentional acts of kindness. She described the importance of seeking to understand the perspectives, beliefs and lived experiences of others. Abby and Leili encouraged classmates to get involved with the club and consider stepping into leadership roles. After the assembly, Abby, Leili and Jill visited the lower school classrooms, handed out activity pages and coloring sheets and talked to the students about the importance of kindness.
