Lower School Field Trips Explore Land and Sky

Fall field trip season continues, with lower school students learning about local, regional and global history in their own backyards.
Fourth graders traveled to the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum in Atchison, Kansas, on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The museum explores the famed pilot's life, her passion for flight, and the science of aviation and navigation. Earhart was the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by airplane and the first woman to make a nonstop solo transatlantic flight.

"From virtual reality airplane racing to riveting a plane wing, testing CGI outfits from Amelia's career and questioning theories about her mysterious disappearance, students came away with new admiration for this aviation pioneer," fourth grade teacher Kaiha Harris said.

Preschool students experienced farm life in real life at Faulkner's Ranch on Thursday, Oct. 15. They fed farm animals, marveled at machinery and visited the pumpkin patch — hands on experiences that enrich what they've learned in their classrooms.

Finally, third grade students visited Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site in Olathe, Kansas — the only working 1860's stagecoach sit open to the public along the Santa Fe Trail. Next week, prekindergarten classes visit Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead and grade 5 travels to Junior Achievement's JA BzTown, an interactive simulation of the workings of Kansas City's economy.

Fall is a great time for students in every division to take their learning beyond the classroom and connect it to what they are learning in language arts, history, math and science classes.
