English Department Chair Recognized With Award

Mr. Luce has taught one undergraduate course each semester at the KU Edwards Campus for nearly thirty years, teaching a wide range of authors and genres. His courses have included contemporary drama, early crime fiction, literature and film, as well as focusing on authors such as Colson Whitehead, Daniel Woodrell and August Wilson.

Across his courses, Mr. Luce uses discussion and collaboration to help students engage deeply with literature. In his Contemporary Drama course, for example, students analyze not only written texts but also elements of theatrical production such as sets, lighting and costumes.

Students consistently point to Mr. Luce’s ability to create a positive and engaging learning environment. In recent KU student evaluations, many students reported that his approach to teaching helped them think differently about course material. Mr. Luce’s experience as an upper school English teacher informs his approach at the university level, as his students noted that he provides clear expectations, thoughtful feedback and a supportive learning environment, qualities that he brings to his work with Barstow students every day. His award recognizes nearly three decades of teaching, mentorship and continued work to help students become thoughtful readers, writers and thinkers. His award recognizes the same qualities that make him such a valued member of the Barstow community, including thoughtful teaching, meaningful feedback and a commitment to helping students learn.
