Second grade teacher Mallory Plungkhen is the 2026 recipient of the Betsi Brooks Krumm award, given for excellence in teaching.
The Betsi Brooks Krumm award, named in honor of a Barstow alumna who dedicated her life to teaching prior to her passing in 2003, is given each year to a teacher nominated by their peers and then selected by a committee.
Ms. Plungkhen was described by one such peer as being a “pillar, peacemaker and problem solver.” She is known for being a comforting presence for students and colleagues and for bringing joy to learning. She is also a talented athlete.
Ms. Plungken was presented with the award by Betsi’s husband Dr. Berent Krumm, her close friend and classmate Jenny Thiessen Waldeck ’90, her friend and classmate Sean Hart ’87 and Lauren Kanan ’15, Director of Alumni Relations.
