Middle & Upper School Orchestra Plays in the Season
Middle and upper school orchestra students performed their winter concert on Thursday, Dec. 4 in Price Hall, under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Birger.
Students in the beginning orchestra opened the program with several well-known melodies, some played in unison and others split into parts. These students, who only began playing this fall, have made huge strides in skill and technique and reading music. The advanced students, who are all in their second and third year of the program, followed with a selection of classical and modern pieces. Several faculty and staff members joined the beginning orchestra for their practices and performance this semester, many of whom are also playing these instruments for the first time. Their participation encourages young musicians and shows that it’s never too late to learn something new.
Barstow’s string orchestra program began in 2023 and is currently in its third year. Participants meet to rehearse in the morning before school and give winter and spring performances. Students can choose to play violin, viola, cello or bass. The orchestra program, which is an elective class, is open to middle and upper school students.
