MLK Day of Service Addresses Campus, Community Needs

On Monday, Jan. 19, students across divisions gathered at Barstow to participate in an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, organized by the Barstow Parent Association and the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity committee.
This year, some of the service projects directly benefitted the Barstow campus. Students helped faculty and staff to improve classrooms and other shared spaces. They helped organize a closet in the science department, built a shelf in Dr. Marien’s office in the upper school, laminated and displayed student work and organized work areas for future teacher use. These tasks allowed for student and faculty collaboration and cooperation, as well as useful and meaningful improvements to the spaces.

Students also had the opportunity to work on service projects for local organizations such as Free Hot Soup, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Wayside Waifs and Meals on Wheels. Activities included packaging donations for patients at Children’s Mercy, decorating lunch bags for Meals on Wheels and cutting up over 1,000 hotdogs for Wayside Waifs to distribute as treats for dogs in their care.
