Students celebrated National French Week this week with activities designed to share French language and culture with the Barstow community.
The week was organized and led by members of the National French Honor Society, who decorated hallways with French flags and informational displays about famous French actors such as Alain Delon, Eva Green and Joe Dassin. Posters highlighting the many regions around the world where French is spoken, including parts of the United States, were also on display.
Students also competed in a traditional “waiter race,” modeled after the Course de Cafés in Paris, where waiters speed walk a set distance while balancing trays without spilling anything.
Throughout the week, French Honor Society members met with lower school classes in the library to introduce them to French geography, architecture, culture and basic vocabulary through stories read aloud in French. Middle school students joined in the celebration by playing French-themed word games and Musical Chairs during class. Students, faculty and staff were invited to answer a daily French-related riddle, with candy rewards from Mme. Anne Hyvrard for correct guesses. Students also participated in a game of Kahoot, competing against each other to answer French trivia questions. Friday, Nov. 7 was designated as a special spirit day, where everyone was invited to wear blue, white and red, the colors of the French flag.
Through these activities, the National French Honor Society shared their enthusiasm for French language and culture with the Barstow community, giving all students an opportunity to learn something new, whether or not they study French in class themselves.
