Barstow Welcomes New President

The Barstow School welcomed Arthur Hall as its 18th President and Head of School on Tuesday, July 1.
Chairman of the Barstow School Board of Trustees Rob Rothhaas said, "Art brings to Barstow a wealth of experience as an accomplished educator, strategic leader and community builder to Barstow. His commitment to academic excellence, student-centered learning and inclusive leadership aligns beautifully with Barstow’s mission to provide symmetrical development of mind, body, and character."

Hall's thoughtful approach and visionary leadership will respect and strengthen Barstow traditions while inspiring innovation across all areas of school life.

"The Board is confident that his stewardship will continue to elevate Barstow’s reputation as a national leader in independent school education," Rothhaas said.

In his opening letter to the school community, Hall wrote: "A school that functions at its highest level should be a place where people understand the importance of academic, artistic and athletic achievement, marvel at the wonders of discovery and bask in the warmth of individual acceptance. The Barstow School is founded on these aspects—mind, body and character—and I am humbled to serve as its 18th President and Head of School.

As I begin my tenure at The Barstow School, I am confident that my 30+ years of independent school experience will guide me in building upon the legacy and vision of Shane Foster. Under his leadership, The Barstow School became the number one independent school in Kansas City, grew enrollment exponentially and expanded academic programs and campus facilities. I have worked at big schools and small schools, spent time in many geographic locations, and implemented student centered-programs that build trust with parents while promoting excellence within the classroom. Simply put, I have arrived at a school whose long-term goals and performance are aligned with mine.

The work that goes into becoming a school leader is significant, and that work is rewarded when one finds a school that matches one’s energy, vision, and personal mission. It is for those three reasons that I choose to enthusiastically pursue the leadership opportunity at The Barstow School. As I begin my tenure here, I am reminded of a quote by Jackie Robinson who stated, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” My focus as a leader is a commitment to service on all levels. I truly believe that educators are called upon to not just teach, but to shape lives. We are responsible for the future of the nation, which ultimately makes us responsible for the entire human race.

Educators spend an exceptional amount of time with young minds, especially foundation teachers of early childhood, and it is paramount that we understand that students look to us for understanding, knowledge and, most importantly, guidance. The educators and staff of The Barstow School understand this. From my first visit, it was clear that my leadership skills will be a natural fit here.

Great schools effectively recruit and retain outstanding educators and create the foundation for a student’s academic success. The Barstow School is highly blessed with a tremendous wealth of excellent educators. This talented group brings a collective high EQ, they are winners of multiple prestigious honors, and, most importantly, they put student learning at the center of what they do. It should come as no surprise to anyone in The Barstow School community that I am about to inherit an education team performing at the highest levels.

I look forward to  continuing to collaborate with our community to provide Barstow students with an engaging and excellent educational experience. As always, we will look to our families to be positive partners in their children’s educational journey. Our faculty and staff have always made a priority of working together as a caring and compassionate learning community with professionalism, teamwork, action, and expertise. We will always put the best interests of our students at the center of our purpose. Join us in ensuring the success of The Barstow School and all the students it serves. Stay healthy, stay positive, and stay connected."
