2027-2028 Upper School Dean of Students

The Barstow School seeks a Dean of Students who is committed to fostering inclusion and belonging among our school’s student population which draws from 70 zip codes. The ideal candidate exudes a genuine love of working with young people and manages student life and accountability with a balance of compassion, firmness, and trust. Reporting to the Upper School Division Director, the Dean of Students is a pivotal leadership role.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students across grade levels
  • Design and lead initiatives that strengthen belonging and promote a mission-centered student culture  
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage budgets for community-building events, trips, and student life programming 
  • Serve on the school’s leadership team and contribute to strategic conversations about student experience and school culture 
  • Collaborate closely with the School Counselor on student psychological and social health concerns 
  • Build empathetic and transparent partnerships with parents and guardian, administrators and colleagues, bringing exceptional communication and steadiness to conversations 
  • Carry some teaching responsibilities based on school staffing needs 
  • Participate in school events, meetings, and professional development as appropriate
  • Work independently, reflect on practice, and pursue ongoing professional growth
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related field preferred
  • Demonstrated success building strong relationships with students and families 
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the developmental needs of high school-aged students
