Grade 2 Students Enjoy Hands-On Dairy Farm Experience

Lisa Tulp
Grade 2 students got a taste and feel for farm life at Shatto Dairy Farm in Osborn, Missouri.
The field trip on Thursday, March 9, gave students a sensory-rich experience that enhanced lessons about nutrition, economics and science. They learned about supply and demand, how milk is processed and bottled, how it moves from farm to table and what cows eat to maintain a healthy milk supply.

Possibly the most memorable part of the tour was the opportunity to milk a dairy cow. Students also met newborn calves, made choices about what to purchase in the farm store—and of course, sampled the different flavors of milk Shatto produces.
