Four juniors earned the Congressional Award Gold Medal, the highest honor awarded by the U.S. Congress to young people. The award recognizes achievement in public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition and exploration.
The program is open to youth ages 14 to 24 and encourages goal-setting and following through on an action plan. To earn the gold medal, students dedicate hundreds of hours to public service, physical fitness and personal development. The program also includes an expedition and exploration requirement, in which students take a trip lasting at least five days and learn about a different culture or experience a new challenge.
More than 50 Barstow students have received the award in the past 10 years.
