Chess Team Places Second in State

Six students represented Barstow at the Missouri Chess Association (MCA) State Scholastic Chess Championship on Saturday, March 7, in Columbia, Missouri.
As a team, the group placed second in the state of Missouri. Seniors Aun Hathiari and Nik Mykhailenko, junior Leo Karaichev and sophomore Abe Gruber each earned individual awards and qualified for the high school Tournament of Champions on April 18 in Columbia. Sophomores Max Richards and Radvin Shahbazian also competed, with this tournament marking Radvin’s first chess competition.

Notably, Aun held out against a National Master from St. Louis in his final match, finally resigning after two hours of resilient play.
