Junior Organizes Service Project to Help the Homeless
In an effort to support local families experiencing food insecurity, Barstow's entire upper school teamed up to make sunbutter and jelly sandwiches for Uplift KC on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Junior Shya Zeldin created, pitched and planned the winter service project with guidance from Mr. Muhammad, Upper School Dean of Student Services. Last summer, Shya volunteered to make sandwiches every week for the local nonprofit, which distributed them to people experiencing homelessness in Kansas City. During this season of giving — and giving back — he invited hundreds of his classmates to join him.
"Shya took the initiative on this project," Dean of Students David Muhammed said. "He came to me with an idea to support Uplift KC—who we've worked with in the past—and he was proactive and diligent in making it happen, finding out the health requirements, getting things like the utensils and plastic bags together. He definitely took a big step up in leadership."
Upper school students took over the COVE, Middle School Commons and a classroom on Thursday to accommodate assembly line-style sandwich making. In total, they made over 600 sandwiches, which Shya delivered to Uplift KC himself.
