Grade 7 Travels to Space

Seventh graders traveled to the Cosmosphere, a science education center and space museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, on Nov. 6–7.
In addition to a number of interactive learning opportunities, the museum houses one of the largest collections of U.S. and Russian space artifacts outside Washington, D.C.

Students got to see the Apollo 13 command module, Odyssey, and the recovered Mercury capsule, Liberty Bell 7. They visited Dr. Goddard’s Lab, where they watched a live demonstration and learned about the history of rockets. In groups, they took on the Apollo 13 challenge, which involved memorizing a diagram and recreating the carbon dioxide filter on Apollo 13. They also examined Cold War relics, and learned about the night sky during a planetarium show. Students ended their trip with the movie “Space: The New Frontier” in the Cosmosphere’s digital dome theater.
