Fifth Graders Produce Regional Weather Reports and Newscasts
Students in Mr. Ryan McFarland’s class learned about weather in different parts of the United States by scripting, filming and editing weather newscast videos.
Small groups of students began the project by choosing one of five regions in the United States to study and report on the weather. They created scripts and storyboards, filmed with green screens, and selected their own background images to transport viewers to their chosen region. Using iMovie and Canva on their iPads, they incorporated these images and added subtitles and transitions to create their weather newscast videos. They used class time this week to finish the editing process, and will present the final projects to their classmates on Monday. According to Mr. McFarland, the important part is that the students completed each step, from scripting to filming and editing, on their own.
Fifth graders will walk away from this project having learned about weather in different geographical locations, but also how to work together, use new tools and technology and carry a project from start to finish.
