Fifth graders departed for Washington D.C. on Monday, April 28, where they spent the week visiting monuments, museums and historical sites.
Students got the chance to visit the places that they have been studying in preparation for the trip. They took walking tours of famous memorials, stopped for a photo in front of the Washington Monument and ate dinner on a Potomac River cruise. Earlier in the semester, students visited Osawatomie, Kansas to learn about John Brown, and they continued that lesson with a visit to Harper’s Ferry to learn about Brown’s raid on the armory. Another tie-in to a previous lesson involved a visit to the Smithsonian Museums, which included the National Air & Space Museum. A few weeks ago, NASA engineer Alicia Cianciolo visited with fifth graders to talk about space and discuss her work on missions to the moon and Mars.
The group will conclude their trip with a visit to the Supreme Court, the Capitol grounds and the Library of Congress. They will fly back to Kansas City and return to Barstow on Friday evening.
