From Preschooler to Presidential Scholar
Senior Paranjay Sharma, a Barstow "lifer," has been named a U.S. Presidential Scholar. Paranjay is one of only three seniors from Kansas and 161 nationwide to receive this honor.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars on Thursday, May 8. Presidential Scholars are selected for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education. The selection committee also considers essays, school evaluations and transcripts, and a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.
“The 161 high school seniors selected for the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Presidential Scholars represents the best of our nation’s schools and inspire hope in the bright future of this country,” said Cardona. “I am delighted to celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage these scholars to continue to aim high, lift up others, and embrace opportunities to lead.”
Paranjay is the Class of 2024 salutatorian, National Merit Scholar with distinction, Congressional Award Gold Medalist and a National Speech and Debate All American. He is also president of Barstow's policy debate team and co-captain of the boys golf team, which this week finished sixth in the state.
“We are so deeply proud of Paranjay’s accomplishments at Barstow," President Shane Foster said. "He is a scholar, a kind young man, and a leader who sets an example for all our students. In the classroom, at debate tournaments, and on the golf course, he has exemplified our founding mission of ‘symmetrical development of mind, body, and character.’ Our entire school community celebrates and congratulates Paranjay on this prestigious honor.”
Director of College Counseling Scott Hill said he believes this recognition is a first for a Barstow student. Paranjay's parents thanked the school's faculty for its tremendous support and encouragement during Paranjay's 15 years at Barstow.
"We are very proud of him and appreciate the well-rounded education Paranjay has received at Barstow, Priyanka Sharma said.
