Literature Meets Technology in Writers' Workshop

Eighth grade Writer’s Workshop students are developing augmented reality versions of scenes from the novel "The House on Mango Street," to re-envision the structure and experience of literature.
Students in LeAnn Wood's class worked collaboratively to develop a physical representation of a scene from the book while layering augmented reality to emphasize the ambiguity of author intent. The newly minted directors, set designers and AR creators brainstormed the set layout this week and will continue the integrated learning experience at IDEA Space next week.

Augmented reality is an interactive experience in which an environment is enhanced with computer-generated visual elements and sounds. Think of it as making a scene from a book virtually leap off the page into a real world setting. AR can provide a user with a heightened, more immersive experience that adds to the user's understanding of materials or concepts.

Beyond using AR to enhance a student's understanding of curriculum, the technology is increasingly used in business settings. Engineers, for example, use AR throughout the product life cycle, applying it to visualize conceptual designs, aid product or component assembly and support maintenance and repair procedures. Learning AR technology now is a skill these middle school students will be able to use throughout their lifetime.
