Upper school students received a preview of a newly-published biography during assembly on Friday, Aug. 14. The author of "Oral Roberts and the Rise of the Prosperity Gospel" is also a familiar Barstow faculty member.
History teacher Dr. Jonathan Root discussed the the process of researching and writing his book about Roberts, who was one of the 20th century's most recognizable evangelical figures. He said he conducted intense research into the pioneering and often polarizing televangelist during his doctorate process at the University of Missouri. He described the work as "difficult and daunting," and said he was ready to give up at times during the process.
"But I kept my head down and kept working," Root told students, and the result is a narrative that gives new insight into Roberts' life and specifically his Prosperity Gospel, which preached that positive acts of faith, such as donating money to his ministry, resulted in favor from God.
"Publishers Weekly" writes, "Root brings Roberts to life as both a charismatic, flawed individual and a figure with deep influence in evangelical history, making for a well-balanced account. This is well worth picking up."
A review from Barnes & Noble continues, "Jonathan Root weaves together accounts of Oral Roberts’ life in a balanced and engaging narrative. This fresh biography covers Roberts’s early life during the Great Depression in Oklahoma, his family’s financial struggles during his early career as a Pentecostal preacher, his healing ministry’s explosive growth in popularity via the new media of radio and television, and his empire’s eventual collapse. An absorbing read."
Director of Middle School Dr. Kory Gallagher conducted the question-and-answer style discussion. Besides being colleagues, they two are close friends.
"It may come as a surprise to some of you that teachers are also humans with friends," Gallagher joked with the audience. "Dr. Root, we are all so proud of you and your amazing achievement."
Dr. Root is already entertaining ideas for his next project, including the possible biography of karate champ turned actor Chuck Norris.
