Barstow Students Give Back To The Community

Barstow students have a long tradition of giving back to the community. On Monday, Jan. 16, several Barstow students volunteered at Harvesters for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Freshman Simran Mohan, woke up early to arrive at Harvesters at 8 a.m. Joined by her mom and brother, they began sorting and organizing food piles, packing meal boxes for seniors and sorting and bagging apples. "My brother, mom and I were so glad to have had the opportunity to help our community on such a powerful day," Simran said. "The positive energy radiating from all the other volunteers in the building made our experience more exciting. We know we were able to accomplish a ton on Monday and make a difference."

She said the awesome feeling of helping people get through another day or week is motivation enough. “It’s just like joy and happiness knowing that you’ll be able to maybe not see it, but know that you’ve impacted a child or a mother’s smile,” she said.

Nearly 550 volunteers made it to the Harvesters facilities in Kansas City and Topeka, including sophomore Mahek Vora and a group of Barstow third graders. Not only did they volunteer but they helped feed the Kansas City community and make it stronger. These students took to heart Dr. King's words: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?"
