As part of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, Nurse Ashley Zinkus offered basic CPR training to groups of lower, middle & upper school students on Friday, Oct. 22.
Upper school students and groups from fifth and eighth grade learned the importance of fast action when offering assistance to a person in cardiac distress. They practiced hands-only cardioplumonary resuscitation (CPR) on training mannequins, learning to provide chest compressions to the beat of the song, "Staying Alive," by the Bee Gees.
Nurse Zinkus also demonstrated how to use automated external defibrilators (AEDs), which are located in several locations throughout the school building. Students practiced placing the electrode pads on a mannequin's chest in the right position to analyze a heart rhythm and administer a shock if necessary.
The training coincides with Barstow's observance of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Earlier in October, Barstow hosted the inaugural Matt Gannon Cross Country Invitational, named in memory of Matt Gannon, a middle school teacher and cross country coach who died from the condition two years ago. On Wednesday, students who were in Mr. Gannon's classes in 2019 wore t-shirts from the event in his honor.
CPR training will be offered again in February as part of American Health Month.
