Junior Divya Dendi has been awarded a coveted summer scholarship to study Chinese language and culture.
Competition is fierce for the National Security Language Institute for Youth (NSLI-Y) Scholarship. Dendi was selected as a finalist for the last two years before earning the opportunity this year.
"The fact that such an amazing student as Divya was a finalist, but not a recipient, for the past two years shows just how competitive this scholarship is! She has worked extremely hard to earn this," Chinese language teacher Chuck Payne said.
The U.S. Department of State's NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative to foster international cooperation by ensuring that Americans have the necessary linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to effectively communicate globally. The program will be virtual this summer due to COVID-19.
