Veteran Visitor Helps Grade 3 Kick Off Tiny Home Project

Veterans Community Project President Jason Kander helped third grade kick off its tiny house project on Friday, March 12. Students will explore real-life applications of area, perimeter, measurement and the design thinking process while they also learn about service and leadership.
Kander made a virtual visit to grade 3 to tell students about the nonprofit organization. VCP works to eliminate veteran homelessness by building tiny houses for temporary stays while providing support services that allow residents to successfully reintegrate into their communities. The VCP community in Kansas City is comprised of 50 fully furnished small-scale homes.

Students took a virtual tour of the community and went inside one of the homes via video. Residents stay an average of 275 days, receiving health services, food, hygiene kits, rent/utility assistance and counseling. The model has been so successful that new communities are being added around the country. Kander oversees that national expansion.

"We are so excited to partner with Veteran's Community Project for this amazing learning opportunity," grade 3 teacher Maegan Lathrop said. Along with learning about the organizations's mission and collecting donations for its residents, students will design and actually construct a tiny home from cardboard inside the school's North Pod. Students who attend in person and online will participate in the construction together.
