Fairy Lights

Oscar Stack
I saw rays of cold light cascading from tiny lights.
The glowing strings,
thinner than angel’s hair.

I wondered if the little lamps
knew they created constellations.
A combination of suns,
some worshiped like Gods.

I thought if I squinted
I’d be able to see the little planets
that some say revolve around them.

I thought of the connection I might have
with these distant lands.

Would I love the rocky wasteland
as much as I love the bog by the lake

With its crisp moss that looks like chewy candy,
or reeds that squeak when frogs navigate leafy forests?

I can't see Venus with my little telescope,
so I wonder if Jupiter is real.

If I rode an Interstellar Eagle
would I crash and burn into some fiery mass?

A cosmic fire, a destination that would take
two lifetimes to reach.
