The 2020 All-Star Weekend Dunk Contest caused controversy as to who had the best dunk.
The last four years have been dry for the NBA, as the same few teams have consecutively made it to the finals since 2015, namely the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors. However, everyone always gets hyped for All-Star Weekend, occuring every February, where the league’s top players compete in different events. One event that particularly caught the eye of several sources was the dunk contest.

The annual 2020 Dunk Contest featured Derrick Jones Jr. of the Miami Heat, Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers, Pat Connaughton of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic. All players displayed incredible dunks through their agility, vigor, experience, and they were able to put on a show for the venue that housed 20,000 people in Chicago. Derrick Jones Jr. came out victorious with a final score of 48, winning by a single point against Aaron Gordon. Many believed that this year’s contest was not fair as Aaron Gordon gave a far superior dunk. However, according to the judges, Jones had the right to take home the trophy.

The final round came down to two contenders: Aaron Gordon and Derrick Jones Jr. Gordon received a score of 47 while Jones defeated him with a score of 48. Minutes after the scores were given, the media blew up saying this year’s contest was unjust to Gordon. Much of the audience felt that Gordon had the far superior dunk. The contest was made up of five judges and Gordon’s loss could be attributed to professional basketball player Dwyane Wade’s rating which brought down Gordon’s score significantly. However, because the scores are all set and done, there is virtually no way of changing what happened since the news broke out.

Dwyane Wade responded by saying, “at the end of the day, I just hope all of you all enjoyed the dunk contest. Eric Gordon is not going to lose any sleep about not winning a ‘dunk contest.’” As a matter of fact, Wade directly responded to Gordon to clear the air between the two. Wade said he hoped to have Gordon on his Instagram Live in order to explain what went down during the contest. However, two months later and the drama and tension has been cleared. Audiences have pointed out that Eric Gordon is one of the better NBA players in the league as of now and that not winning a dunk contest should not undermine any of his skills.
