Ten Seniors Selected for Poetry Honor

The work of ten seniors who participated in the "Dear Poet Project" will be featured on Academy of American Poets website this fall.
The project was one of several poetry-related assignments completed in eleventh grade English as part of National Poetry Month in April 2020. Students responded to poems written and performed by poets who serve as Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets

Congratulations to Miranda Beyer, Phoebe Brous, Kristen Gan, Meghana Gunapati, Susanna King, Nikki Lu,
Ajax Ma, Zoe Moore, Serena Qi and ErikTran.

This is the second year our juniors have written to award-winning American poets. In 2019, five juniors were chosen to be featured on poets.org. Each of them received a personalized response from the poet, which was also published on poets.org. These five students were selected from over 1,800 nationwide and represented 10% of the final 50 letters that received personalized responses.

"This honor speaks volumes about Barstow students and their ability to think critically about literature and connect it to their own lives," English teacher Marina Ganter said.

2020 Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets are Joy Harjo (U.S. Poet Laureate), Marilyn Chin, Kwame Dawes, Forrest Gander, Linda Gregerson, Brenda Hillman, Marie Howe, Khaled Mattawa, Alicia Ostriker, Alberto Ríos, David St. John, Natasha Trethewey, Claudia Castro, Grace Cavalieri, Molly Fisk, Jaki Shelton, Fred L. Joiner, Ed Madden, Adrian Matejka, Jeanetta Calhoun, Paisley Rekdal, Raquel Salas, Kim Shuck, and TC Tolbert.
