Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity
The Barstow School created the Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in mid-June. The school’s formal review of diversity began during the 2019-2020 school year, when a subcommittee of the President’s Council began examining diversity at our school and set the stage for our current Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.
Because we intend for this committee to be a permanent fixture at Barstow, the initial meetings of the committee were spent establishing goals and crafting a mission statement. We are excited and proud to share it with the Barstow community:
Barstow’s Committee on Inclusion Diversity and Equity (ID+E) is committed to building and sustaining a school community that highly values inclusion, diversity, supports racial equity and justice, and promotes equal opportunities for all.
The committee is preparing to conduct an audit of the school’s hiring and admission practices and a review of curriculum with regards to inclusion, diversity and equity. As part of its work, the committee will also work with the Barstow Board of Trustees, school administrators, faculty and staff, students, parents and alumni to better understand the perception of our community.
Our ultimate aim is to gather information that will allow us to examine what we do, how we do it, what we can do better and how we can create a program that will be sustainable.
Our committee is delighted to be at this stage in the process and looks forward to including members of our school community in interviews and eventually to serve on subcommittees. We will keep The Barstow School community apprised of the results of our audit, the establishment of subcommittees and actions planned for the 2020-2021 school year.
Members of the Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity bring a wide range of experience, expertise and perspectives to this work. Director of Campus Operations Liz Bartow leads the committee. In addition to teaching experience in all three school divisions, Ms. Bartow has directed the service learning program and served as Director of Admission and Director of Upper and Middle Schools. - Latha Reiland, parent of Barstow students in the classes of 2021, 2023 and 2026; past president of the Barstow Parents’ Association.
- Jonathan Rosa ’11, Assistant to Baseball Operations, Kansas City Royals, and the Youth Academy.
- Ryann Galloway Tacha, Director of Advancement.
- Billy Thomas, Boys Varsity Basketball Coach; former University of Kansas and professional basketball player.
- Kimberly Vasquez, Lower School Kindergarten Coordinator andTeacher; parent of Barstow alumna Madeline ’16.
- Maurice Watson ’76, former Chairman, Husch Blackwell LLP; former Chairman, Barstow Board of Trustees, 1993-1996.
