Lexi Dixon, junior, won the Dean's List Finalist award at the FIRST Robotics online ceremony Thursday, April 30. The award recognizes the leadership and dedication of FIRST Robotics' most outstanding high school students.
Barstow's FIRST Robotics Team 1939 students and mentors gathered online for the ceremony, and cheered at the exciting news. Dixon is the team's Business & Outreach Captain.
"Lexi is a gifted communicator and a role model," Robotics Coach Gavin Wood said. "Her poise, enthusiasm, engineering expertise and love of STEM has made her the 'face' of our team for the past three years. She has presented several workshops, including one at the FIRST World Championships in Houston last year, about the way in which our team combines STEM and empathy to use engineering for social good."
In November, news coverage at one of our FIRST GoBabyGo events, which included an interview with Lexi, was seen by more than a million people in the U.S. Lexi was also interviewed by the National Science Foundation about her experience on the Barstow team.
On Saturday, May 2, Lexi will attend the online FIRST World Championships with other finalists around the world, to see if she has been presented as one of the top 10 high school students in the world of FIRST Robotics.
Barstow has had three robotics team members named as Dean's List Finalists for three consecutive years. Aasim Hawa, senior, won the award last year, and Alexey Ayzin '19 won in 2018. Izzy Lloyd '14 and Austin Abitz '11 also won the Dean's List finalist award as Barstow students.
