Senior To Present At Global Nuclear Conference
A Barstow senior with a passion for history and global relations will present his essay on nuclear security at an international conference in Vienna, Austria, in February.
Senior John Lubianetsky is one of only three essay competition finalists selected to present during the 2020 International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS), organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency. He wrote about sustaining and strengthening global nuclear security. The competition was open to students and professionals up to age 35 from around the world.
“It’s quite exciting,” Lubianetsky said.
Though this may be the farthest, it is certainly not the first, honor for Lubianetsky. He is a two-time winner of the White Rose Student Essay Contest sponsored by the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, a top three winner in Missouri’s National History Day contest, and winner of the 2018 Eliot S. Berkley Award from the International Relations Council for his essay, "The Case for Refugees: Why the United States Should Play an Active Role in the Global Refugee Crisis." He’s also participated in Barstow’ Model UN Club, debate and Knowledge Bowl teams.
Lubianetsky is enrolled in Barstow’s Certificate of Emphasis (COE) program, which allows students to focus studies in an area of academic interest through a combination of online courses, mentorship and a capstone project. His COE strand is Globalization, Social Justice and International Politics.
