Three Barstow middle school students have earned one of the Girl Scouts of America’s highest awards for leadership and service beyond the classroom.

Ahna Chang, Abby Lopatofsky and Autumn Shemitz, grade 8, received the Girl Scout Silver Award at a ceremony at Cleveland University of Kansas City on Sunday, March 3. The girls each completed more than 50 hours of community service with organizations that serve the Kansas City community.
Autumn partnered with Solace House to collect $914 for the purchase of art supplies and painted several chairs. Solace House is a grief counseling center that supports children and families impacted by the death of a loved one.
Ahna and Abby partnered with Heart to Heart International. With the support of Barstow middle school students, they collected 568 books for children served by the international crisis relief organization. The girls also built two bookshelves.
