World Language Filmmakers Win Awards at Festival

Upper school world language students won multiple awards at the 19th annual Foreign Language Film Festival at the University of Central Missouri on Thursday, April 16.

Students submitted short films that were scripted and acted entirely in French, Spanish and Chinese. Congratulations to the award winners, listed below:
Senior Syd Westphal and junior Shya Zeldin won eight awards for their movie, “Un mes

  • Best Advanced Spanish Comedy, first place
  • Best Overall Spanish Comedy, first place
  • Best Technical Achievement in a Spanish Film, third place
  • Best Spanish Script, second place
  • Best overall Spanish film, second place
  • Best overall comedy across all languages, first place
  • Best overall film across all languages, second place
Freshman Miya Parker, senior Inaya Gadit and junior Emily Nguyen won seven awards for their
film, 過夜 (“The Sleepover”):
  • Best Advanced Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Chinese Mystery, first place
  • Best Chinese Script, second place
  • Best Use of Language in an Advanced Chinese Film, first place
  • Best Overall Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Overall Mystery Across All Languages, first place
  • BEST OVERALL FILM ACROSS ALL LANGUAGES, third place

Sophomore Chase Johnson and freshman Jacob Dummermuth won three awards for their film, 再一次机会 (“Another Chance”):

Sophomores Naeema Banday and Dylan Freiden won two awards for their film, 原地打转 (“Spinning In Place”):
  • Best Elementary Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Ensemble Acting in a Chinese Film, first place
Junior Charlotte Turner and sophomore Anya Stanojevic won two awards for their film, “La mente aterrador del Sr. Monsturo”:
  • Best Advanced Spanish Comedy, second place
  • Best Ensemble Acting in a Spanish Film, second place
Senior Aun Hathiari won an award for his film, 长江灵药 (“The Elixir of Long River”):
  • Best Intermediate Chinese Film, second place
Senior Sarah Villacorta won an award for her film, 跋山涉水 (“Up Mountains... Across Rivers...”):
  • Best Technical Achievement in a Chinese Film, second place
Seniors Darin Goodman and Ethan Jiang won an award for their film, 人质 (“Hostage”):
  • Best Chinese Comedy, second place
Freshman Keiran Vu won an award for his film, 晚间新闻 (“The Nightly News”):
  • Best Intermediate Chinese Film, third place
Juniors Ivan Caballero-Vierya, Shya Zeldin, Sarim Rashid, Mohammad Abu bakr, Adi
Rastogi, Tarun Mettapalli, Grayson Passinisi and Gus Georgie won first place
in the UCM Flash Film Contest this year for their untitled Spanish language film. Flash Film contestants are given only one hour to write, film, edit, subtitle  and premiere a short film on the day of the film festival.
