Barstow Goes Blue for Sporting KC Night

Twenty-two faculty and staff members and student volunteers greeted current and prospective families on the Sporting Plaza before match time. They organized games and giveaways — and offered a glimpse of what makes Barstow an amazing school and a Kansas City's favorite. Members of FIRST Robotics Team 1939 demonstrated last year's award-winning robot and the IDEA Space team brought a jumbo puzzle made at our STEAM learning center, as big crowds gathered around. Nearly 15,000 people attended the Sporting match against the Vancouver Whitecaps, all passing by the school's activation spot as they entered the stadium.

This year, 22 Barstow student soccer players in grades 3, 4 and 5 participated in the Walk of Champions — escorting Kansas City and Vancouver players onto the pitch before kickoff. President and Head of School Art Hall, joined by varsity soccer captains Gus Georgie and Shya Zeldin, conducted the coin toss. And at halftime, faculty squared off against seniors in an entertaining game of bubble soccer. The match between Dan McNickle, Sarah Tulp, Matt Thurman, Ben Ozenberger and Victoria Lierz '13 and seniors Zeldin, Georgie, Ivan Caballero Vieyra, Josh Bourke, Evan Kateusz and Quincy Stribling ended in a 0-0 tie.

As Sporting Kansas City's official independent school, Barstow has the opportunity to participate in an SKC soccer match each year. In addition to fifty faculty and student volunteers, more than 150 members of the school community were in the stadium cheering for Sporting and Barstow.
