French Honor Society Organizes Goods Drive

The French Honor Society kicked off a service drive this week, collecting household and hygiene items for KC for Refugees, a volunteer-run organization that assists refugee families who have relocated to the Kansas City area.
Linda Zemke, president of KC for Refugees’ board of directors, spoke to upper school students Monday about the organization’s mission and current needs. Founded in 2016, KC for Refugees supports about 100 families each month. Families visit the organization’s “welcome closet,” located at St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Belton, Missouri, where they pick up essential items such as sheets, towels, soap, toothpaste and laundry detergent.

Because food assistance programs do not cover most household and hygiene products, KC for Refugees helps fill that gap for families as they adjust to life in a new community. Families can receive support from KC for Refugees for up to two years after they arrive in the Kansas City area.

The French Honor Society’s drive began Monday, Feb. 9, and continues through Friday, Feb. 20. Students can drop off donations in the hallway outside of the BTVN studio, underneath the grade level posters.
